Not to be outdone by The First Tuesday Book Club show, who late last year got the public to vote for Australia’s favourite novel, Booktopia are celebrating all things Aussie throughout January, including a public vote for Australia’s Favourite Novelist.
After a round of nominations, this week Booktopia are running the heats, pitching favourite authors against each other. You may only vote once per day, but you can vote for as many of the authors in each heat as you like. Heat 1 was yesterday, and Heat 2 is today, and the heats end on Friday at midnight. Some of my favourites are featured in today’s heat- Matthew Reilly, Melina Marchetta, Mem Fox, Colin Thiele, Paul Jennings.
These votes intrigue me, because it really is testimony to the authors which the public most respond to. Rather than a literary contest, it is a popularity contest, although I’m not arguing against the calibre of the authors nominated. It is nice to see these authors recognised for their impact on the Australian reading public, instead of on literary merit alone.
So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the Booktopia blog to vote.
